How dangerous is Diabetes and are you at risk?

You probably know someone who is diabetic. Maybe you are dealing with Diabetes yourself. So, what exactly is diabetes anyway?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone made by glucose by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems. Although diabetes has no cure, you can take steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy.

What are some risk factors?

  1. Are you are overweight or obese?
  2. are you age 45 or older?
  3. Do you have a family history of diabetes?
  4. Are you African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander?
  5. Do you have high blood pressure?
  6. Do you have a low level of HDL (“good”) cholesterol, or a high level of triglycerides?
  7. Are you not physically active or lead a sedentary lifestyle?
  8. Do you have a history of heart disease or stroke?

If any of these risk factors sound familiar then you could be at risk.
